Cosgrove High - Newsletter 5
Principal's Report
Anthony Coe

Term 2 at Cosgrove has been an extremely productive term with a number of initiatiebeing put into place throughout the school to support our students and their engagement in learning. As part of the Derwent Collective (Cosgrove High School, Montrose High School, New Norfolk High School, Glenora District High School, Bothwell District High School, Oatlands District High School and Claremont College) students have completed a survey that has detailed the areas where schools need to focus on engagement. From this survey at Cosgrove we have implemented programs such as:
- The Raise Foundation Mentoring Program for Grade 8 students
- Cosgrove Café for all grades
- School Mural project for Grade 8 students
- Visual Art therapy group for all grades
- Self-Discipline Martial Arts group
- Musical instrument repair project for all grades
- Cooking for Grade 8 students
- Bike club for all grades
- Strength and Conditioning – Fit Classes for all grades
- Talk about teens for Grade 8 students
- Peaceful Teens for Grade 8 students
In Term 3 we are looking forward to adding to the list of programs to continue to support our students. The aim of these programs is to not only improve engagement with learning but also improve school attendance and reduce suspension rates. We have made significant progress in this area during the second half of Term 2 and are excited by the way our students have embraced the opportunities presented to them. Upcoming programs in Term 3 include:
- The Smith Family i-track program for Grade 10 students
- The Smith Family Year 8 Futureseekers Program
- The Beacon Foundation Tourism and Hospitality Polish program for Grade 9-12
- Create Crew Arts Mural project for all Grades
- PCYC Youthworks program for Grade 10 students
Our English and Mathematics teachers have been working in Collaborative Planning Teams throughout Term 2 to implement inquiries into literacy and numeracy to measure the effectiveness of our teaching practice on student achievement. We are already seeing improvements in student learning through our work in inquiries and look forward to continual growth for students towards our next phase of PAT testing later in the year.
We have experienced success on the sporting field with our netball and badminton teams doing really well in their respective competitions as well as in cross country where a group of students travelled to Symmons Plains to compete in the All-Schools State Cross Country Championships.
Our Learning Conversations have given the opportunity for more than 70 families to participate in quality conversations with teachers about their child’s learning and progress at school over two days at the end of the term. During Term 3 we will be holding a learning showcase where students will be providing evidence of learning from English and Maths for families to visit the school and engage with.
Transition
Grade 10 students have begun exploring Year 11 options through Transition Planning in our Wellbeing times and through visiting Claremont College during their recent Taster Day. More opportunities will become available in Term 3 with preliminary enrolment sessions coming up as well as chance for families to engage with college staff at Cosgrove during a transition afternoon which will be advertised soon. On Wednesday 2nd August we will hosting our Year 7 2024 information session and look forward to welcoming our new families into the school for the first formal occasion as part of our transition processes for Year 6 students.
Transition to Work
We have been working closely with the Work Skills Transition to Work program throughout Term 2 with the aim of supporting our learners in the successful transition to an approved learning pathway including apprenticeships and traineeships.
Students who are successful in obtaining a placement in the Transition to Work program will have access and support to explore employment opportunities and training with the aim of undertaking an apprenticeship or paid employment in the very near future. Cosgrove would like to congratulate the following students and look forward to hearing of their success toward the end of the year.

Study Hub Update
Students from across Cosgrove High School access the Study Hub to participate in a range of learning activities and intervention groups including numeracy groups, Gifted and extension programs, gross motor skills, literacy support, social skilling club and IT programs.
Outside providers including speech therapists, mental health social workers and occupational therapists also work in the Study Hub to support our students.
Thank you to our wonderful teacher assistants who recently relocated the Study Hub to A Block. The new space looks great!
“The Study Hub is good because I get to do a special IT program with Ange W, play Math’s games with Ms Young and hang out with my mate Wondmagne”. – Sam.

Naidoc Week – For Our Elders
Naidoc Week has seen a number of opportunities for students to engage and learning about Aboriginal Culture. Our smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country was fantastic on Tuesday as we all embraced the theme of For Our Elders. Our students represented the school extremely well at the Deadly Choices Touch Football competition and we have enjoyed participating as a school in a variety of sports and games this week and culinary experiences.

YOUTHWORKS
Youthworks is a program where a group of 8 students from Year Ten got to work with the PCYC team for eight weeks, this term on a Tuesday. The program was a good opportunity for us to work with our peers in a range of activities. Each week we got to go out and do something different. Our first week we went to Tas Laser Skirmish in Kingstone, we then went to Subway for lunch. The students who participated this term were: Tahlia, Deklyn, Will M, Kyan, Areach, Rohan, Jesse and myself.
During this program we did lots of fun excursions but also completed our First Aid training, gained our white card and we also had $200 to spend each on work clothes. We also built benches which will be placed around the school.
Last Tuesday was our last week and we went to the Marine Discovery Centre in Woodbridge. We went fishing and tried to collect some marine samples for CSIRO.
One of my favourite days was when we went to the High Low Ropes. From this experience I have gained confidence trying new things and talking to different people.

CHESS TOURNAMENT
On Tuesday 20th June a group of Year 7’s and some Year 8 and 9’s went to the Interschool Chess Tournament held at Austin’s Ferry Primary School.
We had to play 7 games of Chess during the tournament. Our first game started at 10:30 and finished at 1:30.
Our Cosgrove High School team came 3rd with 11.5 points. We missed out on qualifying for the state championships by 1 place!
Our top four scorers were:
Aiden, Lucas, Hamid and Sher Gay.
Overall we had a great day filled with surprises. We look forward to the next chess tournament in term 3 and hopefully we will be able to qualify for the state championships.
